About Dr. Gloria Shell Mitchell
In 2009, retired mathematics teacher, Dr. Gloria Shell Mitchell, began implementing ways to address social issues that negatively impact academic performance in the middle grades. Her goal was to help reduce the high school drop out rate, improve state test scores in mathematics, encourage teachers and parents not to give up on youths, and enhance knowledge of basic mathematical skillsunities to have fun solving real-life problems. See samples of her student projects in the Blog section.
JOY evolves through A 501 (C) 3 Organization.
About Minnie’s Shell
JOY Youth Services Inc dba MINNIE'S SHELL
Welcome to Minnie’s Shell, a sober-living transitional house designed to be a place of transformation and healing from life’s hurts. It is open to women who need a respite, a chance to recover, relax, reconnect with society and ready themselves for the next step of independence.
This secure dwelling place is named after two special women: My Mom, Minnie Shell, who welcomed men, women, children and families into her home; and my sister, Minnie Elizabeth Shell Carr, who dedicated her services as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) to promoting healing for female veterans suffering the effects of Military Sexual Trauma (MST).
I, Dr. Gloria Shell Mitchell, have spent most of my life teaching and ministering to others, especially youth, while nurturing their faith in themselves and in our Creator. “God has made every thing beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV). Look around on our site and see what He has done for others. If you let Him, He’ll do the same for you.
Thank you for your interest in our housing program.
